How I test a YETI cooler — ice mass vs days

I test YETI coolers — portable hard ice chests, not drinkware — against one job: keep ice for two to three days on a camp or hunt weekend when the chest can stay near a vehicle. The method below is named and ready. It has not been run yet, so its results table is empty, and I would rather show you the empty table than borrow someone else's and call it mine.

The method

Ice mass against calendar days. A known mass of ice goes into a cooler at a recorded time. The cooler sits under a fixed lid-open routine — a set number of openings per day, so the run reflects camp use rather than a sealed box. At each checkpoint the remaining ice is weighed. The output is grams remaining at a stated number of hours, not a marketing day-count.

Two instruments do the work: a scale and a clock. That is the whole apparatus, and it is why the method is repeatable by anyone who wants to check it.

What is measured, and what is still empty

Every slot below is part of a single logged run. All of them are currently blank. When they fill, they fill with dates attached, per cooler.

Why this page shows blanks. A method with invented numbers is worse than no method. I have used every cooler in this class in the field, which is why the site speaks in the first person about handling, carrying and living with them. It is not why the site would ever claim a gram figure. Those are different claims, and only one of them is currently supported.

Where the numbers on this site come from

Until my log exists, day-counts on this site are quoted from published benches and credited every time. Two labs do the heavy lifting:

  • OutdoorGearLab runs a heated room and reports how long each cooler holds below 40 °F. Their protocol is consistent across models, which is why this site uses their column when comparing a Tundra with a Roadie.
  • GearJunkie runs outdoor tests with real ice loads and reports what was left at intervals.
  • Treeline Review republishes the manufacturer's own capacity and ice-weight tables, which are claims rather than measurements.

One rule governs how those get used: a comparison column comes from a single lab's protocol. Mixing one lab's hours with another's days, or with a manufacturer bullet, produces a number that means nothing.

What the photos prove

Nothing, yet — and the pictures on this site say so. Product images here are illustrations, labelled where they appear. They show what a cooler looks like in a situation. None of them is evidence, and none of them shows a test result.

When real test photos exist they will be mine, dated, and named for what they show: the cooler in use, the bench setup, and the scale reading at the end of a run. The portrait on the byline is identity only — there is no cooler in the frame, and it proves nothing about ice.

The skip-if that outranks every number

Skip a large Tundra if one person has to carry it far from a vehicle. No ice-retention figure rescues a cooler that cannot get to where you are going. That constraint decides more purchases than any bench result, and it needs no laboratory to verify.

How units are obtained

Whether each cooler was bought or provided is not currently documented, so this site does not claim either. If that changes, the disclosure changes with it.
