How long do YETI coolers hold ice?

Published tests put YETI hard coolers a little over four days below 40 °F — 4.1 days for a Tundra 45, 4.8 for a Tundra 65 and 4.3 for a Roadie 24 in OutdoorGearLab's heated room. Those are their numbers, not mine. My own ice-mass log has not been run, so this page tells you whose test produced each figure and what would change it on your weekend.
How this lab will measure it
I have used every YETI cooler in this class, and I have not logged start grams, remaining mass or hours on a protocol sheet. That sheet exists and is empty.
The named method is ice mass against calendar days under a fixed lid-open routine: a known mass of ice in, a set number of lid openings per day, the remainder weighed at recorded hours. A scale and a clock, nothing more. The method page shows every slot, all currently blank.
Why it matters that this stays empty: a day-count is only meaningful next to the conditions that produced it. A sealed cooler in a cool garage and an opened cooler in August sun are different experiments with the same product.
What actually changes the answer
Five variables move ice life more than the model on the lid does. Listed as the attributes a run has to control, with no values invented:
- Lid openings. Every opening dumps cold air and replaces it with warm.
- Starting mass and ratio. More ice relative to contents lasts longer; YETI's own guidance suggests roughly two parts ice to one part contents, which is their advice rather than my finding.
- Pre-chilling. A cooler stored warm spends its first hours cooling its own walls.
- Ambient temperature and sun. Shade against direct sun is a large difference.
- Ice type. Block ice, cubes and reusable packs melt at different rates.
This is why the honest answer to “how long” is a range attached to conditions, and why a single confident number should make you suspicious.
Every YETI hard cooler, one lab, one protocol
This is the table worth having, and almost nobody publishes it. Most ice comparisons put one magazine's summer weekend next to another's back deck and call the difference a result. It is not — it is two different weeks of weather.
Below, every row comes from the same lab running the same test: half filled with ice, a temperature logger sealed inside, a temperature-controlled room, over a week, no pre-chill. Because the conditions are identical, the coolers can honestly be ranked against each other. None of these are my measurements.

Every figure above: OutdoorGearLab, who state they buy everything they test. Read it carefully, because it does not say what people expect. The wheeled coolers beat the chests outright, and the biggest box is not the winner — the Roadie 48 outlasts the Roadie 60, and the Tundra 45 finishes below the much smaller Roadie 24. Bigger does not mean colder.
Two limits worth knowing. OutdoorGearLab do not publish the room's set point, the run dates or a start ice mass, so this ranks the coolers against each other but will not predict your weekend. And the Roadie 32 is missing because no lab has ever benched it — it is the only Roadie without a number here.
Field runs from other publishers sit apart from that table on purpose, because their conditions are their own. GearJunkie found about half the ice left in a Roadie 24 at 72 hours, fully melted near 100 hours, with no pre-chill in mid-60s °F weather, and suggested restocking a Tundra 45 around day 5 under a realistic food load. YETI itself no longer advertises a single ice-day figure, which both OutdoorGearLab and Treeline Review note.
How ice life gets cut short
A lid left open, a warm load packed straight from a hot car, or ice that never had a chance against the contents — those shorten a run far more than model choice. I have not logged those failures in grams, so treat them as field observation rather than measurement.
Three habits that help, all of them free:
- Open the cooler on purpose, not out of habit — decide what you want before lifting the lid.
- Keep it in shade and out of the truck bed at midday.
- Leave the melted water in place; cold water holds cold better than the air replacing it.
Soft coolers are a different class with shorter ice life. They solve carrying, not duration, and this page does not put them on the same scale.
Ready to choose Tundra or Roadie
Every model above clears a 2–3 day weekend in someone's controlled test. That means duration is rarely what decides your purchase — the carry question is.
Both families clear the weekend on published benches. Which one fits depends on whether the cooler stays at the truck or gets carried.
